The Difference Between CBD and THC

The Difference Between CBD and THC

CBD (cannabidiol) and THC (tetrahydrocannabinol) are both compounds that come from the Cannabis sativa plant and can be found in cannabis oil. THC is the compound in cannabis that produces the high (psychoactive effect). CBD on the other hand is the major non-intoxicating component of the plant species. Like all cannabinoids, CBD and THC both interact with your body’s endocannabinoid system (ECS), which is an important signaling system regulating a wide range of functions in your body.

Chemical Makeup -

The main difference between CBD and Marijuana is the chemical composition, particularly in THC. Marijuana on average contains anywhere between 5-20 percent THC content. CBD has no more than 0.3 percent THC content and it is basically impossible to get a “high” or psychoactive effect. Despite the similarities between CBD and THC, what marks the differences is the way they interact with your endocannabinoid system.

THC binds with your brain’s CB1 receptors, producing the sense of euphoria or high.

CBD weakly binds to CBD receptors, if at all. In fact it could interfere with THC’s binding, and lessen the psychoactive effect.

Benefits of CBD

May help treat the following:

  • Pain
  • Inflammation
  • Migraines
  • Depression
  • Seizures
  • Insomnia
  • Anxiety
  • Mental disorders or psychosis

Why CBD Oil

CBD is just one of many different molecules unique to the Cannabis plant. CBD oil generally contains low levels of the cannabinoid tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the compound that produces the ‘high’.

People use CBD for a variety of medical conditions without experiencing the intoxicating effects of THC. Most people tolerate CBD well and experience minimal to none side effects.

Hemp derived CBD products with less than 0.3% THC are legal federally but still illegal under some state laws. Cannabis-derived CBD products, on the other hand, are illegal federally but legal under some state laws. Check local legislation, especially when traveling.
